Fleck Knitwear’s roots started in Germany in 1831 with August Friedrich Fleck. August’s son, Ernst Eduard Fleck, continued with the knitting industry, and his son, Ernst Willy Fleck, used hand knitting machines to make custom sweaters for odd-shaped people. Ernst Willy was the first Fleck to come to New Jersey and worked in a knitting mill in 1910.
Ernst Willy’s son, Heinz Konrad Fleck, started working for the knitting machine company Stoll in Germany and became an experienced technician before he left for America and arrived in New Jersey. With a little money and a business partner, Heinz Fleck opened Fleck Knitwear Company in 1960 and built his own factory in 1963 that is still operational today.
Heinz’s son Peter Fleck earned his textile engineering degree in Reutlingen Germany. Following Heinz’s retirement in 1995 and after learning to program newer computerized flat knitting machines, Peter took over Fleck Knitwear and is the current president and CEO. Peter’s son, Mathew Fleck, graduated from Bentley University in 2021 with a Business Management degree and is currently continuing the family traidition along side Peter.
